JabbawockeeZ in Stockton?

At least that’s what I’ve been hearing for over a month now. Supposedly, last season of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew winners The Jabbawockeez will be performing at the Stockton Arena on June 13th. I haven’t heard or read anything official, (The Stockton Arena website does not mention Jabbawockeez anywhere) but I’ve been told our local radio stations are giving away free tickets. Let’s see. Hopefully I can get some photos somehow, ’cause I’m really not down to pay $45 just to see some dancing. I still think Kabba Modern should’ve won, although Jabbawockeez are pretty dope.

Concert Review: The Used at UOP

It’s important for me to acknowledge and represent what goes on in my town. As I stated earlier,  The Used’s performed in Stockton at UOP last Sunday. Here is a review written by Allison Maraboli.

Teenage rock fans bolted into University of the Pacific’s Stagg Memorial Stadium on the evening of May 4, ran down steep steps and sprinted to the front of a stage positioned on a corner of the football field.

They had reason to be excited: the Rockstar “Get a Life” tour had arrived, bringing The Used, Street Drum Corps, Army of Me and other bands to Stockton for a rare local stadium rock concert. Promoter Tim Gardea said about 1,100 fans attended, an impressive number for a Sunday night show in Stockton.

The opening acts provided an uneven start to the show. Lights Resolve began with a 20-minute set of generic alt-rock that received a mildly positive response from the crowd. It was followed by Street Drum Corps, which gave an amazing performance.

The band fuses vintage fashion, vocals that echo ’70s rock and a sense of experimentation into a unique style and sound. Street Drums Corps members took turns drumming on various metal and household objects, even using a motorized grinder on a pipe for one song. Fans responded with excitement.

They reacted with less enthusiasm to Army of Me’s much softer and bland indie set, only to be revived by Straylight Run, which had fans waving their arms in the air with the catchy “Hands in the Sky (Big Shot).”

Headlining act The Used took the stage around 9:30 p.m. for a set that featured songs from its three full-length albums and its new “Shallow Believer” EP. A comprehensive set was needed to please the many die-hard fans of the Utah screamo/post-hardcore band in the audience.

The Used opened with the pounding “The Bird and the Worm,” which led into crowd favorites like “Liar Liar.” For “Paralyzed,” vocalist Bert McCracken invited some 20 kids on stage to dance with him.

Still, the band seemed to lack some of the energetic fervor that’s marked its other shows.

After ending the set with “Slit Your Own Throat,” The Used returned to the stage to play “A Box Full of Sharp Objects” for an encore. Despite what could be considered a mediocre performance in comparison to its past concerts, The Used seemed to leave most fans happy.

Today, The Used performed in Stockton at the University of the Pacific. I can not honestly say that I enjoy their music, but it is rare that known bands/artists come to Stockton. I am not sure if the tickets sold out or not, but surely there are plenty of Used fans in town. One of the 209Vibe(rs) will be reviewing the show. I will post a link to the review and photos once they are available.
