FASHION ROCKS: No, not really.

I come home from work and I see this laying on my bed.

I figure my sister probably left it for me. So, I’m looking through the magazine (and I’m very thorough when it comes to this shit) and the first thing that comes to mind is “this shit is whack!” This magazine has artists such as Justin Timberlake, Duffy, Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Chris Brown and more popular artists known for their style, but they are dressed in clothes they probably wouldn’t wear normally. I get the impression that these artists are more wearing what high fashion considers “in” more than modeling their personal preference. Think Chris Brown’s attire in the ‘Gimme That‘ video with three times a downgrade. My sister comes home and said to me “Did you see the–”
“Yeah, that shit was whack,” I interrupted. I’ve decided I could give a fuck about “high fashion”. No one would ever want to or look good wearing that shit people wear on the runway. Perhaps I’m just more onto urban fashion. But seriously, I shoulda known from that cover that reading the magazine would be a waste of time.

By the way, the FASHION ROCKS concert/runway event airts on CBS on September 9th at 9PM Easter/8 PM Central with performances by Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas, Mariah Carey, Usher, Beyonce, Chris Brown, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and special guests.

Inside The Fader

I finally managed to pick up this months issue of The Fader’s Annual Icon Issue featuring Aaliyah a couple of weeks back. Everyone should know by now how much of an Aaliyah fan I am, so I was excited to see Aaliyah on the cover of a magazine 7 years after her death.

In the photo above, Aaliyah was in a photo shoot with soon-to-be best friend Kiddada Jones, model and daughter of Quincey Jones. Many more photos of the two on the Tommy Hilfiger shoot are displayed in the issue of The Fader.

Many artists, DJs and other discuss such as Missy Elliot, then-boyfriend Damon Dash, Timbaland, Cassie, Ciara, uncle/manager Barry Hankerson, Method Man, her choreographer Fatima Robinson, Kid Sister, Mark Ronson, makeup artist Eric Ferrell, Tank and even Andrew W.K. discuss memories with Aaliyah or the impact and influence Aaliyah had on their life.

This issue was definitely a good read (those who aren’t into reading, there are also many beautiful pictures haha!) This had been my first time reading The Fader magazine (which I was told by an employee at Barnes & Noble is a DJing magazine) and it is quite an extraordinary magazine. If you are too lazy and/or broke to pick up your own copy, you can download the .PDF file from the Fader’s website here.

Soul Remembered: Aaliyah Covers Fader’s Icon Issue

If you are at this site, you should ALREADY know how much I admire(d) Aaliyah. She was beautiful in and out. Besides Mary J., she was the earlier and better, if not best, female singer to blend R&B with hip hop. I must admit, Aaliyah was not the best live singer, but she always put on a great show. Her choreography was always sick. If you aren’t convince Aaliyah is a true SINGER, check out/revisit her songs ‘At Your Best,’ ‘The One I Gave My Heart To‘, ‘Never Givin’ Up’, ‘Turn The Page‘, ‘Journey To The Past‘, ‘I Refuse’,Never No More’. I do feel it’s necessary to state that Aaliyah has singing abilities. Her style is very versatile and although she sings lightly, she switches up her tone often and smoothly. Basically, I don’t wanna hear Aaliyah’s music compared to Cassie or Ciara.

Aaliyah often described herself and style “street but sweet.” We can all agree on that. I respect all that she brought to the music industry and to her fans. Although I never met Aaliyah, she seemed real down-to-earth, even with all of her success, just a genuine, real person. I felt that at around the time of her death, Aaliyah would’ve blown up (think a non-saturated Beyonce). She had so much potential and from watching her ‘Diary’ on MTV, I know she lived her life to her fullest and showed her appreciation to her family daily. All I can add to that is RESPECT. This is why Aaliyah is still remembered today.

Oh and back to the magazine, Aaliyah is on the cover TWICE for Fader’s annual Icon issue. Many people are interviewed about Aaliyah’s influence. Strange thing… NO WHERE have I read reported when the issue would be released. I haven’t seen it in stores and there is no info whatsoever on The Fader’s website.

MWZA.com and EVERY OTHER WEBSITE has more info. Because I was slacking on the updates, I’m a little behind. Yes, in the internet world, if you didn’t notice a new track/article/change in anything within 24 hours you are indeed—LATE. I could give a fuck though.
