They Don’t Sing Like This Anymore:
Artist: Dru Hill
Song: ‘In My Bed So So Def Remix’
Beofore Sisqo went solo and multiple failed group comebacks, Dru Hill was killin’ the R&B game. A song which was an instant classic soon caught an even catchier remix with the help of Jermaine Dupri and Da Brat. I love when R&B artists REALLY sang over a beat which you actually can bounce to.

One of my favorite songs from the late ’90s was Case’s ‘Happily Ever After.’ In the video is Beyonce who plays the leading lady–but this is the OG Destiny’s Child Beyonce. I’m talking about dark hair and looking naturally beautiful without big hair and makeup. Case is an amazing singer and I hear that he is to drop an album soon, which is exciting. Another thing I just noticed is that at the VERY BEGGINING of the song, that instrumental is also sampled in Destiny’s Child’s ‘Cater To You’. Check out the video below.

One of my R&B favorites, Joe, is still making music today. Unfortunately I don’t enjoy any of his newer content half as much as his ‘All That I Am’ album. One of my favorite tracks (which for some reason keeps poppin’ up on the iPhone as shuffle–but I ain’t complaining) is ‘All The Things (Your Man Won’t Do)’. This is real singing that you don’t hear from Akon or T-Pain. Please bring soulful R&B back, I need it.
Side note: Does anyone else get reminded of Shawn Wayan lickin’ shortys ketchup-ed toes in ‘Don’t Be A Menace’. Yo! I remember that and I had to be like 10 years old when the movie came out haha.

Right off the bat, the voice is a lil nasally and kinda whiny. That does not take away from the song AT ALL. Real singing + Raw emotional = No hate. CLASSIC. I still listen to this song quite often. Y’all remember this? He kinda disappeared after this track.

This track was an instant classic. I love soulful duets because of the fact that when two people who can actually sing, collaborate and harmonize it’s always heartfelt and effective. Unfortunately, I just saw a whole clan of YouTubers slaughtering the shit out of the track so I figured this must be featured here as a ‘They Don’t Sing Like This Anymore’ cuz most them chill-rens was horrible.

Looooooooove this track. I’m for serious. Yo, this era. The whole 90’s R&B. MY shit haha. Honestly, I’m more into the mid-late 90’s R&B more contemporary shit but this song is a classic. What’s dope about Mint Condition is that they’re an actual BAND, you know, which plays their own instrumentals. So, real singing plus live instrumentation is amazing for R&B artists. Let me take y’all back but allowing you to press play.

I’m NOT sorry that I’m kinda stuck in the ’90s but FOR REAL this is some good shit. I’ve always thought Blackstreet were dope, although I’m not too familiar with any songs which weren’t singles. One of my favorite songs was ‘Before I Let Go’. I’ve looked on YouTube and NO ONE can touch ‘em. I’ve heard some shitty ass covers. My point is this song is a classic. I remember watching this video when I was a little AHEM young boy living in our shitty apartment off Manchester wishing I could sing like that haha. Check out the old ass video below.

When R&B groups Subway and 702 released their collaborated single ‘This Lil Game’ in 1994, I was automatically blown away. That was saaaaanging. They do not play, it’s so serious. Of course this track is still in regular rotation. Check out the video above.

On the first edition of They Don’t Sing Like This No More, I’ve chosen ‘Knockin’ Boots‘ by H-Town. This song is one of the classic 90’s R&B songs I loved to and still listen to today. I was on YouTube looking up the video and found plenty of horrible renditions and imitations of the song. This track is filled with soul, and of course hormones. The challenging vocal ability showcased in Knockin’ Boots is a perfect example of how They Don’t Sing Like This Anymore.
